Artist statement:
Hello! My name is Niké (or Crystal as online alias).
I am 19 years old and currently studying Visual Communication (3rd year) at Zuyd University of Applied Sciences in Maastricht, the Netherlands.Drawing has always been my way of understanding the world. I have been creative since I was a child. It has always been something I enjoy and am good at. I love transforming blank pages into colourful works of art and imaginative stories, and coming up with quirky characters and telling stories through them. It is a way for me to express myself and hopefully inspire others.My work often stems from fantasy and ‘’whimsy’’.
In a world that can sometimes feel grey and harsh, I want to show that there is also room for imagination, colour and playfulness. Not everything has to be serious all the time. Fantasy can be a form of escapism, but also a way of looking at the world from new perspectives.I almost always work intuitively. Ideas often start as an image or a text that suddenly pops into my head. Only then do I start researching and developing the idea further. My own emotions and reactions to situations play a major role in this. Sometimes social themes also recur in my work (such as inequality or feminism), but I often first depict the feelings they evoke in me.My inspiration comes from many different sources: music, fashion, films, books, games and internet culture. I consume a lot of different media, which often gives me many different perspectives. Music is one of my greatest sources of inspiration.
It allows me to feel things and come up with ideas that I might not otherwise have found. Fashion fascinates me because it brings ideas to life in a different, more conceptual and experimental way. Fan art has also played a big role in my development as an artist and is still one of my biggest interests. It has a special place in my heart.
It is my way of connecting with stories and characters I love, and it inspires me to keep creating. I also draw inspiration from a variety of series, animated films, games and online communities where creativity and imagination are central.I usually work digitally, but I am also drawn to analogue materials such as pencils, paint and pastels. I love experimenting with them. But my creativity is not limited to 2D. Cosplay, make-up and fashion design help to transform it into something you can see, touch and wear. This allows me to bring my imagination to life in the real world.
My work is primarily intended to inspire. I want to invite people to rediscover their imagination and whimsy and escape from everyday reality for a moment.Because what would the world be without a little bit of fantasy :)
